It’s true that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure… at least when the trash comes from NYC, NY. Big ups to Justin Gignac – the artists of this simple ingeniousness – who started his NYC Garbage project as a bet and an experiment that he ultimately won. The experiment and this entrepreneurial venture began in 2001 after Justin overheard a co-worker say that packaging wasn’t important. As such, he started packaging NYC trash in simple, clear, sealed and smell-proof boxes and sell them for $10 as collectibles by numbering, signing and dating them.
As time passed, NYC Garbage has expanded into different US cities and is being sold for up to $100 for limited edition versions. More than 590,000 boxes of garbage have been sold to folks in over 30 countries! Take note that some eclectic individuals (I didn’t want to use the word ‘crazy’) are buying this!
